Coca-Colas Classic Christmas, the wildly popular immersive holiday light and adventure experience, is returning to the Houston area this Novemberthis time with a brand-new Alpine Adventure theme AND a new location. Revels Houston is holding auditions Aug. 23 & 24 for its 2025 Christmas Revels production

HOUSTON, TX Revels Houston, incorporated as a local nonprofit in 1990 nineteen years after its first national iteration, has annually brought holiday joy, cheer, song, and dance to audiences from Harris County and beyond. The organization has announced open auditions for its 2025 Christmas Revels Celebration of the Winter Solstice.

The auditions are scheduled for Saturday, Saturday, August 23, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, and Sunday, August 24, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at St Lukes United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston.

Singers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for auditions the Christmas Revels features choruses of both adults and children. Traditionally, the show is set in different time periods and global locations for each years run. The 2024 show was set in Elizabethan England; this year, organizers have opted to set the show in 18th-century Scotland for a Celtic-themed production.

While there is some acting to propel the shows plot along, the Revels is predominantly a singing showcase with dozens of chorus members and two different bands performing and need people confident in their abilities to sing, vocalize, and harmonize, said Paul Woldy, president of the Revels Houston board of directors.

Auditioners are required to pre-register at http://bit.ly/41eu9RA to book a 30-minute slot on one of the audition days. Auditioners will try out in groups, with each singer having an opportunity to demonstrate range, tone quality, and intonation. Additionally and optionally, auditioners may opt to present up to a minute of solo, unaccompanied vocal piece. Formal training and being able to read music are not prerequirements for consideration.

Revels Houstons 2025 Christmas Revels Celebration of the Winter Solstice will take place at the Midtown Arts Center (MATCH) December 19 - 21 for a total of five performances. As a volunteer nonprofit organization, Revels does not offer stipends to performers. Required weekly rehearsals will take place Monday evenings and every third Saturday during the daytime from September 6 through performance week.

TWUs Center for Women Entrepreneurs Marks 10 Years of Fueling Women-Owned Businesses

Since 2015, the Center for Women Entrepreneurs (CWE) at the Jane Nelson Institute for Womens Leadership at Texas Womans University has been helping transform visions into ventures, providing funding, business advisement, and training for more than 1,900 women-owned businesses across Texas to date.

To celebrate its milestone anniversary, CWE will host an anniversary event on July 8 and will feature a vendor showcase of 40 grant recipients.

Over the last decade, CWE has awarded more than $2.37 million in grant funding to 467 women entrepreneurs across Texas, supporting efforts to launch, grow, and scale businesses in urban centers and rural communities. Among the rich diversity of ventures supported by CWE are a number of intriguing enterprisessuch as a pet gift shop, doula service, custom prosthetics designer, and even a mortuary that collectively showcase the innovation and creativity of women-owned businesses across Texas.

In addition to funding, CWE has conducted more than 300 training sessions to equip women business owners with the skills, strategies, and resources needed to sustain a successful enterprise. The Center has also received a number of accolades and awards, including the Educate Award (2022) from the Denton Chamber of Commerce, as well as University of the Year (2025), Corporate Supporter of the Year (2024) and BIPOC Corporate Champion awards (2024) from the DEC Network.

Overview of CWE Programs

AccelerateHER
This immersive program fast-tracks early-stage, women-owned startups into scalable businesses. Six entrepreneurs are selected to participate in each cohort, gaining access to expert-led education and resources through CWE and its statewide partners.

To date, the rotating program has served women-owned businesses in Denton, Dallas, Houston, Abilene, Mission, Austin, and Corpus Christi.

Veteran Woman Grant
Designed to boost economic development, this grant supports innovative projects by veteran woman-owned small businesses across Texas.

Texas Rural Woman Grant
This grant empowers rural women entrepreneurs to pursue new ideas and expand business opportunities in underserved communities.

StartHER Grant
Aimed at startups, the StartHER Grant helps women-owned businesses launch innovative new initiatives and build early-stage momentum.

Investing in Visionaries

From Dallas to Houston, from Abilene to Longview, the stories behind CWE grant recipients across Texas are as vibrant and varied as Texas itself. A few examples of recently awarded CWE grants include: Embody Health (Keller), a womens health clinic offering holistic, compassionate care; Clean Eatz (College Station), a franchise promoting wellness through balanced meals and fitness education; ATX Supper Club (Austin), a dining adventure community creating inclusive connections through beautiful meals; and Rose Soiree (Corpus Christi), a creative floral studio specializing in events and workshops.

Grants awarded prior to 2025 have supported a host of innovative businesses across the state, such as Centro de Consejeria Familiar (Arlington), providing culturally sensitive counseling to Latino families; Copano Oyster Company (Austin), promoting sustainable coastal practices; and Game Theory TX (Fort Worth), a scratch kitchen and board game bar focused on community. Other CWE-supported businesses include boutique storefronts, youth education enterprises, a baby supply vending machine company, and a natural personal care product brand for people with chronic skin conditions.

CWE is a flagship program of the Jane Nelson Institute for Womens Leadership at Texas Womans University, the nations largest woman-focused university system. New Clinical Trial in Houston Aims to Make Treatment Gains Against Hair Loss

In Houston, there is a new clinical trial for men who struggle with pattern hair loss (PHL), a genetic disorder also known as androgenetic alopecia (AGA) the most common form of hair loss in the world, which affects 80 million Americans alone.

The study at SBA Dermatology is evaluating an investigational, non-hormonal oral tablet called VDPHL01. There are currently no FDA-approved treatments like this available and the call for better options is great. This is because available treatments have fallen short in addressing the needs of people coping with hair loss and thinning hair. Whats more, existing treatments are often accompanied by burdensome daily application of messy solutions and unwanted sexual and heart-related side effects.

For too long, men have struggled with the emotional toll of pattern hair loss, having had to accept inadequate results and limited treatment options, said Megan Couvillion, M.D., Principal Investigator and Dermatologist at SBA Dermatology. The initiation of this clinical trial is a major step forward due to the lack of novel and effective FDA drug approvals for hair loss in over two decades. Importantly, many of my patients have expressed wanting new treatments without the development of unwanted and sometimes serious side effects. New, clinically proven approaches can change their treatment journeys and improve outcomes for men who have been struggling to find better solutions.

New clinical trial now enrolling

Dr. Couvillion, who is leading the study in Houston, is looking to enroll participants who are male between ages 18-65 and experiencing pattern hair loss. In addition, participants must be in good general health; have normal liver and kidney function; be willing to maintain at least 1/4-inch length hair during the study with the same hairstyle, hair length, and hair color throughout the study; and maintain consistent use of general hair care products and regimen throughout the entire study. Trial participants will be compensated for their time and receive the study medication at no cost. Insurance is not required.

Also, the clinical trial will last 13 months with participants receiving either the study drug or placebo. At month six, all participants will receive the study medication for the remaining six months. Each visit will include health assessments and hair evaluations.

Bringing the community together to share experiences, challenges, results and possibilities

As parents search for the answers in providing services and care for their loved one with special needs, they sometimes dont know the questions to ask to get the answers they need. Where do parents/guardians go for help? What types of services are available? Is there financial assistance to help pay for these services?

The good news is that under Home and Community-Based Services-Adult Mental Health (HCS) there is a waiver program that provides home and community-based services to adults with disabilities. The bad news is, the waiting list to receive such services is an estimated 18-20 years. Thats right, one nearly has to register their child for services in kindergarten to possibly receive services when they age out of high school.

The demand for services is only growing, said Rachel Jelks, Founder & CEO of TEAM Abilities, an agency that provides services to adults with special needs through ISS/Day Habilitation and Community Living care. And while parents are waiting on services what are they supposed to do? Many parents have to quit their jobs to stay at home with their child. The need is desperate for interim and long-term care.

The gap is so wide and vast that Jelks is hosting a conference with other leaders in the IDD Community so parents, professionals and educators can learn more about available services.

There are numerous enclave services that can assist parents while in the gap of waiting for more advanced, long-term solutions, said Jelks. There are solutions, services and programs available and we need to start connecting the dots for our families, educators and professionals in our county.

The conference, Connecting the Dots and Filling in the Gaps, is set for Saturday, October 26, 9am to 2pm, and is provided free-of-charge to parents, educators and professionals in the Montgomery county and surrounding area.

The conference is a symposium for solutions with expert speakers and panelists that can engage one-on-one with attendees, said Jelks. This is our way of bringing everyone together in the same room to share experiences, challenges, results and possibilities.

In fact, 15% of public school students received special education and/or related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

So the question is, what happens?

What happens to children who age out of high school? What happens to young adults with special needs who are not college bound? TEAM Abilities, a local agency serving adults with special needs, is hosting a Career Fair & Ice Cream Sundae Bar as they look to hire for several positions proving a great opportunity for job-seekers to move into a recession-proof industry.

"In this day there is so much uncertainty, but the healthcare profession will always remain a constant in today's society," Rachel Jelks said, Founder & CEO of TEAM Abilities. "We can provide training and instant access into the field of healthcare with no experience needed."

Positions available range from Direct Care, Housekeeping, Appointment Runners, Transportation, Care Coordinators, Instructors and Handymen. Training is provided for all positions and employees are paid weekly.

The way Jelks puts it, she would rather hire someone with a lot of heart and little experience saying, "You can always train someone on how to do certain procedures, but you cannot train someone on how to care."

Even as solid as the healthcare field is, TEAM Abilities is just as solid having recently celebrated its 14th anniversary in Montgomery County. The agency has 20 Community Living homes, as well as an active ISS day habilitation program.
