Dr. Dana Ondrias, CEO and Executive Director at Mann Eye, and Dr. Mike Mann, founder of Mann Eye Institute, will mark 45 years of providing exemplary eye care in Houston this month.

Organization Marks 45 Years of Serving Greater Houston and Austin

In October 1977, local entrepreneur and ophthalmologist, Dr. Mike Mann embarked on a career that may have seemed a little scary to some, but not to him. Dr. Mann was one of the first eye surgeons in the country to integrate ophthalmology and optometry and helped to make Houston the epicenter of laser vision correction.

A former Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force, Dr. Mann has personally performed more than 40,000 LASIK cases and 50,000 cataract cases. Dr. Mann was one of the first eye surgeons in the country to integrate ophthalmology and optometry in the early 1980s, hiring and training optometrists in clinical assessment and surgical care. Mann Eye Institute was one of the first practices in Texas to offer the advanced laser technologies for LASIK and the first in the US to use a specialized laser for cataract surgery.

“I started my practice on October 31 with one employee in a sublet office attached to a hospital in Humble, Texas,” recalls Dr. Mann. “While trying to build the practice, I would moonlight at the hospital to keep busy. I learned quickly I wasn’t good at hiring people. When I get asked what the secret to our success has been, I tell people I have surrounded myself with great people who are smarter than me.”

Dr. Dana Ondrias, CEO and Executive Director at Mann Eye, joined the team 19 years ago and has been instrumental in creating a culture that puts the staff and the patient experience as the top priorities.

“We have an incredible team which is dedicated to ensuring our clients receive exceptional care,” said Dr. Ondrias. “It takes a great staff committed to serving others and we have worked hard to create an environment that is fun, flexible and rewarding for every member. As we continue to grow, attracting great talent and training will remain at the center of our efforts.”

This month, Mann Eye Institute (MEI) marks 45 years of providing exemplary eye care. The organization will reminisce and celebrate its history but, more importantly, MEI is looking to the future. In March of this year, MEI relocated its flagship office to the Museo, Institute for the Medical Arts in the Museum District. Occupying 2 floors of the 10-story complex, Mann Eye continues to invest in people, technology, and facilities.

With 17 locations in Greater Houston and Austin, growth will come from future technologies that are speedier with a faster recovery time for the patient.

“Technology is the catalyst for growth at MEI and our surgeons are early adopters,” said Dr. Ondrias. “In the next 10 years, ophthalmology will continue to see new technology which we will adopt when it benefits the patient by providing a better experience and a speedier recovery.”

The ophthalmology industry is expected to grow by 43% over the next four years due to an aging population, demand for vision correction, and rising cases of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension which can impact the health of the eye.

“Before we make a decision about the practice, we ask two questions,” said Dr. Mann. “The first question – what is best for the patient? Then, we follow-up by asking how the decision will impact our team. When we make decisions based on taking care of others at the highest level, everything else will fall into place.”

The Mann Eye Institute is a leading eye care facility with 17 locations in Humble, West Humble, Houston, South Austin, North Austin, Sun City, Sugar Land, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Livingston, Bay City, Copperfield Pearland, Baytown, Tomball and Cleveland, Texas. With various locations in the Houston and Austin areas MEI provides the full continuum of care, including, LASIK eye surgery, cataract surgery, premium lens implants, dry eye treatment options and designer eyewear and eye care needs.
